Laiwan immigrated to Canada in 1977 during the war betwwen the liberation movement and Ian Smith's white settler regime. Currently resident in ZImbabwe, she attended ECCAD, and graduated with honours in interdisciplinary Studies in 1983. Recent articles include "Women and Contemporary Culture in Zimbabwe", and "Decolonizing the Image", an interview with Zimbabwean filmmaker Miriam Patsanza. She facilitated a seminar on Women and Technology in Southern Africa (March 1990) sponsored by the UN in Harare with delegates from the SADCC (Southern Africa Development Conference Committee) region.
